Having trained at the Stockholm Conservatory as well as in Berlin, Aulin—the brother of composer and pianist Laura Aulin—established in 1887 the first continuously active Swedish quartet, one that focused on Scandinavian music alongside the traditional classical repertoire. Around the turn of the century he turned greater attention to conducting, directing the Stockholm Konsertföreningen, which he also helped to found, while leading The Göteborg Orkesterförening between 1909 and 1912. His works reflect the German Romantics and display the influence of Schumann and Greig; they encompass orchestral and chamber pieces along with occasional incidental music.
