The instrumental math rock trio from Brooklyn called Turing Machine took its name from the theoretical computing apparatus conceived in 1936 by British mathematician Alan Turing that underpins present-day models of computation and computability. Guitarist Justin Chearno and bassist Scott DeSimon, previously collaborators in the D.C. noise combo Pitchblende, came together again in the new project. Once Pitchblende dissolved after issuing 1995’s Gygax!, the pair settled in New York City and recruited ex-Vineland drummer Gerard Fuchs, thereby forming Turing Machine. Drawing on an expansive range of touchstones that encompassed vintage prog, Krautrock, and post-punk, the group released its debut album, A New Machine for Living, in early 2000.
