Ursula Rucker stands apart as a diva defined entirely on her own terms rather than fitting any funky archetype. Through partnerships with the Silent Poets, King Britt, Josh Wink, and the Roots, she refined a seductive spoken-word approach across Philly soul, hip-hop, and new jazz. Her work weaves social awareness together with womanhood, black culture, and love into an overall sound that draws listeners in. After earning her degree from Temple’s journalism school, she first presented her poetry in 1994 at the celebrated Zanzibar Blue in Philly. In the years that followed, she displayed a smart, sultry bravado free of unnecessary ornamentation. The late ’90s highlighted her more abrasive poetic edge on tracks such as Josh Wink’s “Sixth Sense” and 4hero’s “Loveless.” Her first album, Supa Sista, which carried a street-fighting spirit, appeared in September 2001 on !K7. Silver or Lead (2003) and Ma’at Mama (2006) came next.
