Veilburner operates as a fiercely intense death metal duo that merges lyrics exploring occult themes and transhumanist concepts with ferocious guitar assaults and relentless percussive barrages. After cultivating an audience through a self-released series of three albums—The Three Lightbearers in 2014, Noumenon in 2015, and The Obscene Rite in 2016—the pair progressed toward more elaborate, thematic works such as A Sire to the Ghouls of Lunacy in 2019 and the symbolically dense The Duality of Decapitation and Wisdom in 2024.

Hailing from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the lineup consists of vocalist, lyricist, and designer Chrisom Infernium, born Chris Sheppard, alongside multi-instrumentalist and producer Mephisto Deleterio, born David Moody. Their partnership originated when Moody handled production and engineering duties for material by Sheppard’s prior group, Torture Ascendancy 1307, a project centered on the persecution and execution of the Knights Templar on heresy charges in medieval France. Sheppard meanwhile nurtured deep fascinations with occult practices and transhumanism, the notion of enhancing human existence through the fusion of technology and biology. Moody’s collection of incomplete compositions aligned seamlessly with that perspective, forming the foundation for Veilburner’s first full-length effort, The Three Lightbearers, issued in 2014. Across the subsequent two years the duo shaped their explorations into an informal trilogy by extending those threads across Noumenon in 2015 and The Obscene Rite in 2016.

The pair reignited their turbulent creative direction with A Sire to the Ghouls of Lunacy in 2018, stretching their sonic palette to emphasize multiple portrayals of psychological dread. That focus carried forward through Lurkers in the Capsule of Skull in 2021 and VLBRNR in 2022, heightening the disquiet via incursions into industrial and blackened territories. The Duality of Decapitation and Wisdom in 2024 returned Veilburner to emblematic occult concerns, presenting seven songs that each span precisely seven minutes.
