During her teenage years, Virgínia Rosa joined forces with her cousins to establish Grupo Lógica, which took part in various student festivals. While studying guitar under Luís Rondó—who had recently appeared on Itamar Assumpção’s Beleléu Via Embratel—Rosa gained an introduction to Assumpção himself through her teacher and became the inaugural backing vocalist for Isca de Polícia, a group that broke new ground with its approach to female vocals in Brazil. She remained with that ensemble for five years. Afterward she contributed to Tetê Espíndola’s album Gaiola and performed alongside her at the Festival dos Festivais on TV Globo, the contest Espíndola captured with the song “Escrito nas Estrelas.” In 1985 Rosa stepped in for Ná Ozzetti within Mexe Com Tudo and continued with the band for seven years; during this period the group toured Europe, recorded an album in France, and ultimately disbanded in 1992. That same year Rosa, already active as a solo performer, turned her full attention to her individual career and released her debut album Batuque under the production of Swami Jr.
