The origins of Chicago-based indie electronic duo Walter Meego date to 1999, when Colin Yarck and Justin Sconza first encountered each other at the University of Illinois. Sconza had devoted his early years to classical and ragtime piano before shifting toward rock and jazz in adolescence, and during college he performed with multiple ensembles across an array of genres. Yarck, shaped by Chicago’s electronic music community, took up beatmaking and DJing in 2002 through his partnership with fellow devotee Pat Pelligrini. When Yarck transported some of his gear to campus in 2003, he and Sconza began experimenting together informally. Following their graduation that year the pair went separate directions yet kept working on music independently—Sconza producing cassette recordings while Yarck and Pelligrini sustained their collaboration—until Sconza reunited with the other two. In 2004 the resulting trio adopted the name Walter Meego for live performances. Their debut recording, the Walter Meego EP, appeared in 2005 and drew favorable notice from Rough Trade along with numerous online writers. Pelligrini soon stepped away to focus on his full-time employment, at which point Jarrett Spiegel joined; Spiegel exited in 2006 and was succeeded onstage by Andrew Bernhardt. The group’s first full-length album, Voyager, arrived in 2008.
