Originating in Portland during autumn 1996, the punk-pop quartet Wolf Colonel first took form on the Lewis and Clark College campus as singer/guitarist Jason Anderson’s solo acoustic venture. A recent Elliott Smith concert prompted Anderson to play regularly across campus and even stage several early performances inside his dorm room. Attendance at a Halo Benders show introduced him to K Records founder Calvin Johnson, who received self-released cassettes including Sex Riot and This Is Compton; once bass and drums were added to the material, Johnson scheduled a session at Dub Narcotic studio that produced the self-titled debut EP issued in early 1999. For the spring tour that followed, Anderson enlisted rhythm guitarist Jake Longstreth, bassist Ryan Wise, and drummer Adam Forkner, after which the full-length Vikings of Mint appeared in early 2000 and Castle arrived later that fall.
