Their identities remained unknown, yet the music they produced—a volatile blend of noise rock amplified by synthesizers and interwoven with nonsensical vocals—stood apart from any ready reference point. XBXRX came together in Mobile, AL, during the spring of 1998 and entered the recording studio before the lead guitarist had reached high school. The Singer/Other Guitar Player, the Bass Player, the Guitar Player, the Drummer, and the Keyboard Player issued their first collection, Greatest Hits, Vol. 2, through NFJM that same year and followed with singles and EPs on Anal Log, Troubleman, Sound on Sound, and Arkam. In 2001, 5RC put out Gop Ist Minee, an album marked by its discordant fury. The group shared stages with Unwound, Deerhoof, Q and Not U, and the Sissies, donning assorted uniforms for brief, high-intensity performances. Four clubs in Mobile and the city of Sunnyvale, CA, imposed bans on the band. XBXRX disbanded in the spring of 2002, although they still issued earlier recordings, among them the collaboration Mardi Gras with Mr. Quintron and Miss Pussycat. The split did not last; Sixth in Sixes appeared on Polyvinyl in September 2005. Wars arrived in 2007 after several 7" singles and shows-only promos had surfaced.
