Biography
Yö ranked among the most influential acts in Finnish rock for well over twenty-five years. The band originated in Pori during 1981 with an initial lineup that included frontman Olli Lindholm, singer and keyboardist Jussi Hakulinen, guitarist Jani Viitanen, bassist Juha "Liuhu" Rauäng, and drummer Harri Varhala. Although countless personnel shifts followed, Lindholm alone remained a constant presence across the group’s entire run. After inking a deal with the Poko imprint, Yö released its first album, Varietee, in 1983 and scored an immediate success via the single “Likaiset Legendat I.” Hakulinen departed two years afterward, handing full creative authority to Lindholm, who would later rank among the enduring icons of Scandinavian popular music. That same year the band delivered Myrskyn Jälkeen and achieved another substantial success with “Niin Paljon Me Teihin Luotettiin.” The 1990 single “Vie Mut Minne Vaan” became Yö’s largest chart triumph to that point, and the group sustained both strong sales and critical regard throughout the decade, regularly appearing on Finnish radio through tracks such as “Hyviä Vuosia,” “Ihmisen Poika,” and “Sua Muistoistani Pois En Saa.” Entering its third decade, the band scored a further smash with “Kaksintaistelu” and marked its twenty-fifth anniversary in 2006 via the double-disc set Kolmen Illan Varietee.
