Biography
Young Heart Attack came together in 2001, drawing on veteran players from the Austin, TX music community: Chris Hodge handling vocals and guitar, Chris Smith—previously of Sixteen Deluxe and already answering to the name Frenchie—on guitar, Steven Hall on bass, and Joey Shuffield, late of Fastball, behind the drums. Jennifer Stephens joined on vocals to serve as a counterpoint to Hodge’s raw, unrestrained delivery. Early 7" releases and steady live appearances, among them a slot at South by Southwest, secured the band a contract with XL; before long the group was performing across Europe with like-minded acts such as the Darkness and the Datsuns. The single “Misty Rowe” surfaced in autumn 2003, prompting additional U.K. shows, after which the band’s first full-length XL album, Mouthful of Love, reached American listeners in May 2004.
