Colin Caulfield launched the Young Man project in 2009 during his English and French studies at Loyola, sharing original songs and renditions of material by Animal Collective, Bon Iver, and Beach House through his YouTube channel. His interpretation of Deerhunter’s “Rainwater Cassette Exchange” stood out so strongly that vocalist Bradford Cox labeled the recording “fantastically superior to the original.” Momentum built by summer 2010 as Young Man supported Langhorne Slim and Lou Barlow on tour and secured a deal with Frenchkiss, which soon issued the debut EP Boy.

In 2011 the group shared stages with Cold War Kids, Fanfarlo, and Grouplove while outlining plans for a trilogy of albums. The first volume appeared that September as the expanded full-length Ideas of Distance. The following May brought Vol. 1, produced by the Sea and Cake multi-instrumentalist John McEntire and featuring a full band for the first time. The trilogy closed with 2013’s Beyond Was All Around Me, which introduced more developed production and detailed string arrangements. After completing the associated tours, Caulfield decided to retire the Young Man name while continuing to release music under other guises.
