Emerging from Auckland, New Zealand, the nomadic pop duo A Dead Forest Index operates under sibling leadership while channeling atmospheric textures shaped by influences that span William Blake, Scott Walker, Nico, Swans, and the Romanian lăutari troupe Taraf de Haidouks. Brothers Adam and Sam Sherry launched the project in 2008 as Adam’s solo outlet, with Sam becoming a full participant in 2010. Adam’s androgynous, otherworldly voice, which invokes Antony and the Johnsons, early Marianne Faithfull, and Nico, receives further depth from multi-instrumentalist Sam’s inventive production work, producing an overall sound that recalls early 4AD acts such as Dead Can Dance, Bauhaus, and This Mortal Coil. Between 2012 and 2014 the pair refined its approach through constant touring and released the EPs Antique and Cast of Lines, the latter appearing on Pop Noire, the label run by Jehnny Beth of Savages. Sargent House issued the duo’s much-anticipated full-length debut, In All That Drifts from Summit Down, in 2016.
