Growing up in Medani, a locale long celebrated for its musical heritage, Abdel Aziz entered performance almost as a matter of course, born into a musical household and already displaying an angelic voice while still a schoolboy. Sudanese radio first featured his singing in the early 1970s, and 1975 brought his initial major success with the release of “Laih Ya Galbi Laih” (Why, My Heart, Why?). Like numerous other Sudanese musicians he performs on oud and vocals, yet he moves beyond regional boundaries by freely merging traditional and Western musical idioms. Between 1987 and 1988 his concerts in England drew widespread admiration.
