Not to be confused with the actor known for roles in The Godfather and Late Night with Conan O'Brien, Los Angeles' Abe Vigoda emerged as part of a fresh wave of experimental punk acts tied to the all-ages venue the Smell, alongside groups such as Mika Miko, Silver Daggers, the Mae Shi, and No Age. Juan Velazquez on guitar and vocals, Michael Vidal on guitar and vocals, David Reichardt on bass, and Reggie Guerrero on drums came together in Chino in 2003 after Velazquez and Vidal attended a Mika Miko performance at the Smell during their high-school years, an experience that directly prompted them to launch their own project. Following an extended series of limited-edition solo and split 7" singles steeped in distorted noise punk, the group issued its debut full-length album, Sky Route/Star Roof, via Not Not Fun Records in 2005, then delivered Kid City on olFactory in 2007. While Abe Vigoda cultivated a dedicated local audience through frequent appearances at the Smell and support slots with touring bands including XBXRX, Chromatics, and Old Time Relijun, the musicians began weaving tropical and Caribbean rhythms into their style. By the start of 2008 they had completed work on the follow-up album Skeleton, which appeared that July on Post Present Medium (PPM), the label run by No Age's Dean Spunt. A five-track EP called Reviver arrived the next February, and the band returned with the full-length Crush in 2010.
