Biography
The New Jersey musician Kevin Whelan, once a core member of the Wrens, created Aeon Station as his own outlet. The Wrens built a following through three albums of sharp, tuneful indie rock that earned strong notices throughout the 1990s and the first years of the following decade. After the band issued its widely admired 2003 release The Meadowlands, repeated attempts to finish another album stalled, prompting Whelan to step away and work independently. He took the parts he had written for the abandoned fourth Wrens record, supplemented them with fresh material, and introduced Aeon Station via the 2021 album Observatory.
Whelan, his guitarist brother Greg Whelan, drummer Jerry MacDonald, and singer/guitarist Charles Bissell together attained cult standing within indie circles. Plagued by label complications, overlooked chances, and unfortunate scheduling, the Wrens became known for receiving abundant critical respect while commercial results lagged behind. Once The Meadowlands drew near-universal acclaim, the group devoted the next ten years to a successor that ultimately failed to appear. Even after signing to Sub Pop in 2013 and completing a mastered version, Bissell withdrew to refine his songs further; Whelan had already approved his own contributions. Conditions worsened through the rest of the decade until Whelan chose to abandon the project and assemble his own record from the remaining Wrens tracks. Under the Aeon Station name he revised those pieces and composed additional songs. Sub Pop issued Observatory at the end of 2021, with Greg Whelan and Jerry MacDonald appearing on multiple tracks.
