Biography
Hailing from Palermo, Italy, the worldbeat ensemble Agricantus derived its name from the Latin phrase signifying "song of the wheat fields." Its roster comprises Giuseppe Panzeca on vocals, mandolins, sitar and further stringed instruments, Tonj Acquaviva on keyboards, samples/programming, vocals and a huge array of percussion instruments, Rosie Wiederkehr on guitar, vocals, samples/programming, Mario Rivera on bass, keyboards, vocals, samples/programming, and Antonjo Corrado on guitar and keyboards. The group fuses a dizzying array of traditional world music forms from across the globe not only with one another but also with club-ready electronic dance grooves, yielding a striking contrast of ancient and modern elements. Its debut U.S. release came in 1999 with the compilation The Best of Agricantus.
