Biography
Michigan native Algee Smith first gained widespread attention toward the end of the 2010s through lead performances in the BET miniseries The New Edition Story and the HBO series Euphoria, all while establishing himself as an R&B recording artist.
Smith entered the world in Saginaw, Michigan, before his family relocated to Atlanta, where he launched his acting pursuits during childhood. As a teenager he secured multiple small-screen parts, then shifted to Los Angeles upon turning twenty in search of expanded prospects. Within weeks of arriving he was cast as Ralph Tresvant, frontman of the iconic 1980s R&B ensemble New Edition, for the 2017 BET miniseries The New Edition Story. That same breakthrough year brought a starring turn in the widely praised crime film Detroit plus the release of his debut EP, Listen. Blending polished romantic R&B with hip-hop elements, he followed the next year with the mixtape 24 and secured another major leading part in HBO’s Euphoria. Balancing the two careers, Smith issued his first studio album, ATL, in 2019, led by the body-positive single “All Girls Matter.”
