Biography
Vulnerability and volatility merge in Alice Glass' output through her whispered and wailed vocals paired with dramatic electronics. Recognition first arrived via her role as the dynamic frontwoman of Crystal Castles across the duo's three self-titled albums, which opened with the 2008 release Crystal Castles and closed with 2012's Crystal Castles (III). After departing the project amid allegations of abuse by bandmate Ethan Kath, she forged a solo path that channeled trauma and recovery into candid, cathartic work. The 2015 single "Stillbirth" directed proceeds to the anti-sexual violence organization RAINN, while subsequent projects such as the 2017 Alice Glass EP and the 2022 album Prey//IV sustained a fusion of unflinching candor and unsettling textures.
Born Margaret Osborn in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Glass navigated a strained parental relationship and difficulties at Catholic school by immersing herself in music. Her first guitar arrived at age 11, after which she entered the local punk scene and formed the experimental punk band Fetus Fatale as a teenager. A 2003 encounter with Ethan Kath at one of the group's performances led the 15-year-old Glass to begin collaborating on the project that became Crystal Castles.
The pair launched officially in 2006 via the single "Alice Practice," which drew interest from London's Merok Records and landed on the 2008 self-titled debut. Two further albums, 2010's Crystal Castles (II) and Crystal Castles (III), preceded her 2014 exit. Signing with Loma Vista as a solo artist, she issued "Stillbirth" in 2015, again routing sales proceeds to RAINN. August 2017 brought the single "Without Love" alongside her self-titled debut EP, which included input from former HEALTH member Jupiter Keyes and Atticus Ross.
Citing the #MeToo movement, Glass issued an October statement detailing sexual, physical, and mental abuse by Kath during their partnership. Kath filed a defamation suit the next month, yet the case was dismissed on procedural grounds in February 2018, and a judge later awarded Glass nearly $21,000 in attorney fees that May.
Glass maintained her schedule of touring and releases throughout: the January 2018 single "Cease and Desist," which she called a "call to arms for all survivors," was followed in April by an EP of Alice Glass remixes from tourmates Zola Jesus and Pictureplane. June saw the co-written single "Mine" with songwriter Justin Tranter. Later that year she placed "I Trusted You" on the Adult Swim compilation Fever Dreams, appeared on Dreamcrusher's album Grudge2, and joined Wicca Phase Springs Eternal on Zubin's "Dark Alley" from the EP Heavy Down Pour.
A cameo on Nedarb's 2019 album Amity came first, then the January 2020 inclusion of "Sleep It Off" on the soundtrack to Floria Sigismondi's The Turning, an adaptation of Henry James' The Turn of the Screw. August brought "Nightmares" to the Sermon 3 Recordings compilation Sermon 4 Anniversary. She ended the year with a remix of Pabllo Vittar's "Rajadão" on the deluxe edition of 111. The January 2021 track "Suffer and Swallow" previewed her debut album, while further 2021 activity encompassed the single "Legend" with Alice Longyu Gao and a remix of Dorian Electra's "Fist" featuring the Horrors' Faris Badwan. Prey//IV arrived in February 2022, incorporating traces of hyper-pop and trap.
