In the late 1980s the widely admired and frequently imitated Los Angeles punk outfit the Descendents entered an extended break after vocalist Milo Aukerman departed to enroll full-time in college. The remaining musicians opted to continue under the name ALL, drawn directly from the title of the Descendents’ last studio album of 1987. Drummer Bill Stevenson, guitarist Stephen Egerton, and bassist Karl Alvarez—all previously of the Descendents—formed the core, while former Dag Nasty frontman Dave Smalley handled vocals. The Cruz label signed the group, which delivered the 1988 EP Allroy for Prez and the full-length Allroy Sez. Smalley soon gave way to Scott Reynolds.

Under Reynolds the band produced four albums: Allroy’s Revenge in 1989, the 1990 pair Trailblazer: Live and Allroy Saves, and 1992’s Percolator. In addition, the same lineup supported original Descendents bassist Tony Lombardo on his 1991 solo album New Girl, Old Story, issued under the Tonyall credit. Reynolds eventually left (later appearing with Goodbye Harry and the Pavers), and Chad Price joined, yielding the final Cruz release, 1993’s Breaking Things. A short-lived major-label deal with Interscope produced 1995’s Pummel; the band then moved to Epitaph for 1998’s Mass Nerder, the self-titled 1999 album, and 2000’s Problematic.

In 1996 Aukerman and Stevenson briefly revived the Descendents, with ALL members Alvarez and Egerton completing the lineup, resulting in a tour and the new studio album Everything Sucks.
