Biography
VNV Nation ranks among the twenty-first century’s foremost EBM and industrial outfits while spearheading the futurepop movement. The ambitious project has woven together anthemic ballads, neo-classical arrangements, and propulsive club rhythms. Ronan Harris, its sole consistent member, favors cleanly delivered melodies and accessible hooks rather than screamed distortion, and his words project an optimistic tone—VNV signifying “Victory Not Vengeance.” The band’s loyal audience stretches from alternative-rock listeners to goth-club regulars, resulting in festival headliner status and repeated sell-outs across Europe and North America. Whereas the 1995 debut Advance and Follow delivered abrasive force, Futureperfect in 2002 fused trance and synth-pop textures, and Judgement from 2007 adopted a rock-oriented approach without guitars. During the 2010s the group enlisted classical musicians for live shows, issuing the full-length Resonance: Music for Orchestra, Vol. 1 in 2015.
Ronan Harris formed VNV Nation in London in 1990, releasing the 12-inch “Body Pulse” that May. “Strength of Youth” appeared several months later, after which Harris moved to Toronto at year’s end and supported Nitzer Ebb on their Canadian dates. Returning to Europe, he contributed only occasional compilation tracks until signing with Discordia in 1995 and delivering Advance and Follow. Three years later the Off-Beat label issued both the album Praise the Fallen and the EP Solitary. Empires followed in 1999 on Dependent, with Metropolis handling the U.S. release in spring 2000. Club staples “Standing” and “Dark Angel” showcased Harris’s command of driving rhythms alongside expansive dark-ambient passages.
After the 2001 single “Genesis,” Futureperfect arrived in 2002 as the first VNV Nation album created entirely with software synthesizers; it became the group’s initial entry on the mainstream German album charts and on American dance-album listings. The ensuing world tour was captured on the 2004 live CD/DVD Pastperfect. A harder, more percussive direction emerged with 2005’s Matter + Form and continued on 2007’s Judgement. Live material filled the 2009 set Reformation 01, while the same year saw the studio album Of Faith, Power and Glory, which Harris described to a reporter as representing “the three things that people desire and which can make you or destroy you.” Automatic appeared in fall 2011, followed in 2012 by the delayed remix EP Crossing the Divide.
VNV Nation joined a full symphony orchestra at Leipzig’s Gothic Meets Klassik festival in November 2012; technical issues rendered the recordings unusable. After 2013’s Transnational and its tour, the band prepared Resonance: Music for Orchestra, Vol. 1, reworking catalog selections for orchestral and vocal forces. Following longtime drummer Mark Jackson’s departure in 2017, VNV Nation released its tenth studio album, Noire, in 2018.
