Biography
Germany's Project Pitchfork emerged as longstanding figures in the goth scene, merging darkwave and electronic dance elements with foreboding industrial touches while pioneering their signature dark-electro style. Vocalist Peter Spilles, keyboardist/programmer Dirk "Scheubi" Scheuber, and keyboardist/programmer Jürgen Jansen have anchored the lineup since the project's launch in 1989, steering it across decades marked by milestones such as 2001's Daimonion and 2010's Quantum Mechanics.
Their introduction came with the 1991 album Dhyani, after which they issued records nearly every year throughout the following decade. Two LPs appeared in 1992, Lam-'Bras and Entities, while the 1993 Souls/Island EP expanded on the latter by incorporating further installments from the Mirror song series. Io arrived in 1994 as their first digitally produced effort, marking an initial entry on the German charts along with their debut American release. A highly active 1995 brought the EPs Ch'i and Corps d'Amour alongside the LP Alpha Omega, the founding of their Candyland Entertainment imprint, and a European tour supporting then-newcomers Rammstein.
Industrial music's growing mainstream presence prompted heavier guitar riffs and denser synth textures on the NIN-influenced ¡Chakra: Red! in 1997, when Jürgen Jansen also joined as an official member and the band undertook its first United States tour. Warner Music Group/EastWest issued Eon: Eon in 1998, supported by the single "Steelrose," which served as their inaugural music video. A period of reduced activity followed before Daimonion surfaced in 2001, featuring the club hit "Timekiller" and achieving their strongest chart placement up to that point.
The NUN Trilogy appeared the next year as a set of three releases comprising the Inferno LP together with the View from a Throne and Trialog EPs. Several years of relative inactivity preceded the dark-toned Kaskade LP in 2005 and the Wonderland/One Million Faces EP that arrived with it in 2007. Another landmark year unfolded in 2009 with the sharply produced, dance-focused Dream, Tiresias! on Prussia Records, a companion remix album, and their second United States tour. Continuum Ride followed in 2010, succeeded the year afterward by the more accessible Quantum Mechanics, which again climbed the German charts. In 2011 the band assembled First Anthology, a two-disc collection of 31 remastered tracks.
Black, a two-disc LP, continued their core sound upon its 2013 release and preceded the ambitious concept album Blood in 2014. Second Anthology arrived in 2016 as another compilation marking nearly three decades of the band's dark electronic dance output. Commemorating their 25th anniversary that same year, the fresh studio effort Look Up, I'm Down There appeared, with Akkretion launching a new trilogy in 2018.
