Amparo Meza Cruz came into the world on 22 April 1925 in Tapachula, Chiapas, Mexico, and left it on 13 January 2002 in Mexico. The Mexican vocalist, widely admired across her homeland, earned particular acclaim for her interpretations of classic bolero repertoire. Broadcasts she delivered in 1938 brought her early prominence while she was still in her teens. She subsequently launched a recording career and gave frequent live performances at venues across Mexico. Listeners and critics alike regarded her as a singularly insightful performer of songs by Agustín Lara. A 25-minute documentary titled Amparo Montes, helmed by director Maricarmen de Lara from a script by Leopoldo Best and Alfonso Morales, examined key moments of her professional life in 1993.

During 2001 a tribute concert took place at a museum in Mexico City featuring appearances by Pepe Jara y José Amado. Soon after the event, Montes contracted pneumonia and required hospitalization.
