Merging punk's raw aggression with progressive rock's sweeping scope, ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead emerged as defiant outsiders who steadily sharpened their sonic approach while holding fast to their visceral intensity. During the final years of the 1990s, the band's explosive concerts and habit of smashing equipment found expression on the 1999 release Madonna, yet the addition of greater discipline and refinement produced Source Tags & Codes in 2002, their landmark debut for a major label and one of the most ambitious alternative-rock statements of the early 2000s, an era when such large-scale rock was rare. Their taste for bold statements, together with the complex, expansive textures associated with Pink Floyd and Yes, shaped subsequent recordings such as Worlds Apart in 2005, while their independent streak prompted several projects, among them The Century of Self in 2009, to appear on the band's own imprint. Remaining faithful to their passionate and thoughtful ethos throughout the 2010s and afterward, they delivered standout efforts including Tao of the Dead in 2011 and X: The Godless Void and Other Stories in 2020; the quadraphonic recording XI: Bleed Here Now in 2022 further underscored their dedication to monumental rock.

The first incarnation of ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead took shape in late 1994 when singers, guitarists, and drummers Jason Reece and Conrad Keely, longtime companions who first met in Hawaii before settling in the indie stronghold of Olympia, Washington, came together. In that city Reece played drums for outfits such as the queercore group Mukilteo Fairies and Honeybucket, while Keely performed with Benedict Gehlen and Nancyville during his studies at Evergreen State College. Following their move to Austin, Texas, Keely and Reece began performing under the name "You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead," later incorporating the conjunction and ellipsis into the official title.

Guitarist Kevin Allen and bassist/sampler Neil Busch soon joined, converting the indie duo into an art-minded quartet. After placing the track "Novena Without Faith" on the 1995 cassette compilation Austin Live Houses and issuing a live cassette on the local Golden Hour label, AYWKUBTTOD signed with Trance Syndicate, the imprint run by the Butthole Surfers' King Coffey. Their self-titled debut arrived in January 1998, preserving the spirit of their already storied, chaotic live performances. When the label folded, the band shifted to Merge Records, where they recorded Madonna with producer Mike McCarthy before its October 1999 release. Rejoining McCarthy for the February 2002 Interscope album Source Tags & Codes, they earned broad praise for its detailed arrangements and commanding compositions. The 2003 EP The Secret of Elena's Tomb extended the blend of anthemic rock and introspective ballads first heard on Source Tags & Codes.

Drummer/percussionist Doni Schroader entered the lineup in 2004 alongside bassist Danny Wood, who took Busch's place. Worlds Apart, released in January 2005, brought greater complexity to AYWKUBTTOD's music; with touring keyboardist David Longoria added, the group expanded to a six-piece for the extended tour supporting the record, which reached number 100 on both the U.S. and U.K. album charts and number 40 in Germany. Although Worlds Apart received strong reviews, its commercial results proved modest. The band drew fresh drive from that setback and returned with the more straightforward, high-energy So Divided in November 2006, featuring appearances by Amanda Palmer and Hilary Hahn; the album climbed to number 188 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart. Additional personnel shifts followed as keyboardist Clay Morris replaced Longoria, drummer Aaron Ford succeeded Schroader, and bassist Jay Leo Phillips took over for Wood. In 2007 the group scored the roller-derby documentary Hell on Wheels and embarked on international touring.

Resuming recording, ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead established their own Richter Scale Records in association with the Texas-based Justice Records. Freed from standard label obligations, they issued the EP Festival Thyme in 2008 to build anticipation for a full-length project. The Century of Self appeared in February 2009; captured live to achieve a more immediate sound than their major-label work, it reached number 169 on the Billboard 200 and number 22 on the Billboard Independent Albums chart.

The band subsequently streamlined to a four-piece configuration for their next recording. Completed in ten days, the February 2011 release Tao of the Dead ranked among their most ambitious conceptual statements, presenting a 16-song sequence split into two extended pieces, each performed in a designated key; the album became a Top 20 success in Germany. After Keely relocated to Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital, he, Reece, and Tao of the Dead newcomers Autry Fulbright and Jamie Miller traveled to Hanover, Germany, in mid-2012 to track Lost Songs, one of the group's most explicitly political collections, which surfaced that October.

Returning to Texas' Hill Country, the band recorded IX in November 2014, an inward-looking album titled after the ninth planet in the solar system as depicted in Frank Herbert's Dune. Its layered textures drew from artists spanning the War on Drugs, Peter Gabriel, and Echo and the Bunnymen, and the record charted in Germany. Following the ensuing tour, AYWKUBTTOD paused activity while Keely released the solo album Original Machines in 2016. The following year the band marked the twentieth anniversary of Madonna by performing the album in its entirety across Europe.

Keely returned to Austin in 2018, after which he and Reece devoted focused effort to the next album. Extending the reflective character of IX, X: The Godless Void and Other Stories was produced by Keely and engineer Charles Godfrey; it emerged on Dine Alone in January 2020, opening the band's twenty-fifth year. Another Top 20 entry in Germany, the album also registered on the Austrian and Swiss charts. When the COVID-19 pandemic halted touring, the members began writing anew. Drawing on their admiration for classic 1970s rock albums, they created the 73-minute XI: Bleed Here Now, issued in July 2022 and recorded in quadraphonic sound with contributions from Palmer and Spoon's Britt Daniel.
