Biography
A Grammy-winning songwriter and producer, Andrew Wyatt fronts the Swedish electronic pop outfit Miike Snow as its lead vocalist. His solo debut Descender arrived in 2013, while the band’s efforts Happy to You and iii both landed inside the Billboard 200’s Top 50 in 2012 and 2016, respectively. Outside the group he earned major commercial and critical recognition by co-writing Bruno Mars’ 2011 smash “Grenade” and co-authoring the Academy Award-nominated, Grammy-winning “Shallow” for the Lady Gaga–Bradley Cooper film A Star Is Born. Additional songwriting credits include work with Charli XCX, Florence + the Machine, Flume, Liam Gallagher, and Miley Cyrus. In 2023 he teamed once more with longtime collaborator Mark Ronson for the Barbie soundtrack, co-writing “I’m Just Ken” and producing Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?”
Born in New York City in 1971, Wyatt spent his childhood in Manhattan immersed in dance and music studies. Following high school he enrolled briefly in jazz studies at The New School, where he met Greg Kurstin and launched the short-lived experimental pop project Funkraphiliacs. Capitol Records soon offered him a solo deal, and he spent a year tracking material at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios before drug and mental-health struggles led him to rehab. He later devoted several years to classical-music training at the University of Colorado, then returned to New York and formed the A.M. alongside former Jeff Buckley sidemen Michael Tighe and Parker Kindred; the trio issued one self-titled album in 2005 before disbanding.
Wyatt first traveled to Sweden in 2007 and there connected with musicians Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg. The three founded the dance-rock band Miike Snow, whose self-titled debut appeared in 2009, followed by the aforementioned Happy to You and iii, both of which reached the Top 50 in Sweden and the United States. During a month-long hiatus from the group he recorded Descender in Prague with a full orchestra, enlisting longtime associates Anthony Rossomando of the Libertines, Brad Traux of Interpol, Damon McMahon of Amen Dunes, and John Herndon of Tortoise.
Even before Miike Snow’s formation, Wyatt had begun writing and producing for other artists, contributing several songs, among them “PoP! Goes My Heart,” to the soundtrack of the Hugh Grant comedy Music and Lyrics. Further studio work followed with Mark Ronson, Carl Barât, Coco Sumner, and others. His 2011 co-write on Bruno Mars’ chart-topping “Grenade” earned a Grammy nomination for Song of the Year. Subsequent collaborations encompassed Charli XCX, Beck, Emile Haynie, Florence + the Machine, Flume, Lorde, Liam Gallagher, Miley Cyrus, and Caroline Polachek. Beyond pop, he has created sound installations for galleries and joined Ronson and Wayne McGregor on the score for the 2012 one-act ballet Carbon Life.
In 2018 Wyatt co-wrote “Shallow” for A Star Is Born. The worldwide hit received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song, collected four Grammy nominations, and won trophies for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Song Written for Visual Media. Returning to work with Ronson in 2023, he helped assemble both the score and soundtrack for Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, co-writing and producing “I’m Just Ken” and Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night,” as well as co-producing Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” and additional tracks; the album peaked at number two on the Billboard 200. Also in 2023 Wyatt issued the single “Beyond the Pale,” a brooding breakup anthem marking his first solo release in more than a decade.
