Biography
Antemasque emerged as an indie rock quartet assembled by Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, both veterans of At the Drive-In and the Mars Volta. The lineup was rounded out by Dave Elitch, the Mars Volta’s former touring drummer, and Flea, longtime bassist of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
The band’s music favors lean, brisk indie rock that leaves behind the post-hardcore intensity of At the Drive-In and the progressive-rock emphasis that defined the Mars Volta.
After Bixler-Zavala declared the Mars Volta finished in spring 2013, suggesting an artistic divergence, he and Rodriguez-Lopez resumed writing together less than a year later at Flea’s urging. The four musicians tracked a three-song EP and then a full album at the bassist’s studio; the latter appeared in November on Nadie Sound. Before the record’s release, Flea’s other obligations prevented him from touring, so Marfred Rodriguez-Lopez, equally skilled on bass, assumed the role.
