Emerging in the mid-2010s through several reinterpretations of disco classics, Aristofreeks nonetheless trace their origins to earlier eras in dance music. Max Martire built his career as a DJ on Ibiza, securing residencies at both Space and Amnesia. He played a part in launching the popular after-hours Space Terrace at the first of those clubs. Known as "the surgeon"—distinct from the artist Surgeon—because of his exacting approach to mixing, Martire claims involvement in shaping EDM. During a studio collaboration, he encountered the seasoned producer Shanti Matkin, who performs under the name Shanti. Choosing to team up as Aristofreeks, the pair issued their initial singles across 2014 and 2015. Those releases reworked, drew samples from, and echoed the Chic Organization's classic material such as "We Are Family," "Good Times," and "Thinking of You," enlisting contributions from Kathy Sledge of Sister Sledge along with the Next Step, featuring further Chic associates and disco figures Alfa Anderson, Luci Martin, and Norma Jean. Martire and Matkin soon assembled an extensive body of work, which they brought to audiences beyond their Ibiza foundation.
