Biography
Roland Hackl, Karin Steger, and Andreas Kinzl, who performed under the alias DJ Scott, formed the Viennese trio Aromabar. Their output blended soft textures with a lightly progressive trip-hop approach, merging atmospheric moods and standard song frameworks without hesitation. Comparable to a relaxed Saint Etienne, the group routinely combined conventional acoustic instruments with electronic ones, guiding tracks into surprising rhythmic areas, evident on the 1999 cut “Africa for Eu” and in the understated kitsch of their version of Nick Kamen’s “I Promised Myself,” already popular with numerous Euro-dance remixers. Aromabar first surfaced in spring 1998 via the Fast Forward compilation, then issued the single “Yuri in Space” one month afterward, which reached the national Top 30. By the close of 1999 the group had finished its debut album, titled 1!. When Milk & Honey arrived three years later, Steger’s vocals had come to dominate the arrangements while Kinzl’s contributions registered as markedly reduced.
