Arpanet

In 2002 Arpanet delivered its electro-techno concept album Wireless Internet on Air’s Record Makers label, with Virgin overseeing distribution throughout the U.K. Speculation about connections to the enigmatic Detroit-area outfit Dopplereffekt had already circulated widely before the record appeared, yet its sonic character together with the Dataphysix affiliation made the link unmistakable. Motifs recalling Kraftwerk and Cybotron merged with unsettling, suspense-filled textures that suggested film scores from the 1980s by Ken Russell and John Carpenter. Rooted in the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network, or ARPANET, Wireless Internet imagined a future in which every individual could connect to a supercomputer through a handheld device.
