Twin brothers Jon Votta on guitar and Vince Votta on drums assembled the American hard rock outfit Art of Anarchy in 2014 alongside bassist John Moyer of Disturbed and guitarist Ronald Jay Blumenthal, the Guns N' Roses member widely recognized under his stage name Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal. The concept first took shape in 2011 when producer and guitarist Bumblefoot captured studio recordings during breaks between Guns N' Roses performances. In 2014 the group approached Stone Temple Pilots/Velvet Revolver frontman Scott Weiland about contributing vocals and co-writing material for their project; he participated, yet when the self-titled debut arrived in June 2015 he had already stepped back, describing the work as a one-time paid assignment without plans for ongoing involvement. Weiland was discovered deceased on his tour bus the following December after an accidental drug overdose, prompting 2016 speculation that Creed vocalist Scott Stapp would assume lead-singing responsibilities. The ensemble later confirmed Stapp's addition and issued the single "The Madness" ahead of its second full-length release on Century Media. That sophomore album, also titled The Madness, surfaced in March 2017.
