Formed in 1990 from the dissolution of Rome's established Onda Rossa Posse, Assalti Frontali took shape under the name Frontal Attack. The ensemble established itself inside the centro sociale circuit, gravitating especially toward Forte Prenestino. Revenue generated by their independently manufactured and circulated recordings financed construction of a dedicated studio inside the same complex.

Together with fellow Roman outfits One Love Hi Power and Musica Forte, the group launched the La Cordata label, enabling release of its own work and that of other artists without concessions required by major contracts. In 1991 the single "Baghdad 1991" appeared, confronting the Gulf War. Two years afterward the track "Sud" was laid down; it is recognized for prompting Gabriele Salvatores to create a film depicting insurrection among the disadvantaged populations of Italy's southern Mezzogiorno.

Conflitto, the second album, was captured and balanced at Forte Prestino before being sold through the underground leftist paper Il Manifesto. A three-album contract with BMG was executed in 1998. The first project under that arrangement, Banditi, surfaced in 1999 with production by Ice One. HSL followed in 2004 after an interval of nearly five years. Mi Sa Che Stanotte... reached the market in 2006 and remains the act's most visible album.
