Canadian rock outfit Attack in Black came together in Welland, Ontario, during the opening years of the 2000s. Their initial sound drew parallels to Gainesville, FL's Hot Water Music and other forceful post-hardcore acts, yet the quartet gradually wove a folk sensibility into its punk foundation, citing equal inspiration from Neil Young and Refused. The lineup featured vocalist/guitarist Daniel Romano alongside his brother Ian Romano on drums and vocalist/guitarist Spencer Burton; Ian Kehoe stepped in on bass after original player Matt Ellis departed following the self-titled EP. In spring 2006 the group joined Toronto-based Dine Alone Records, whose roster already featured Moneen, City and Colour, and Bedouin Soundclash. Several members also backed Alexisonfire guitarist/singer Dallas Green's City and Colour project. Ahead of the July 2007 full-length Marriage on Dine Alone, the band issued The Widows EP and the Northern Towns 7", the album blending rock, folk, and punk elements. That autumn The Curve of the Earth appeared as a digital-only release paired with a limited-edition vinyl pressing.
