Madrid-based outfit Axolotes Mexicanos unleashes an exuberant strain of indie pop laced with sugary hooks and drawing from punk, chiptune, J-pop, trap, and assorted other strains. Although the sound projects a playful, almost juvenile innocence, the words explore darker territory such as revenge fantasies, extraterrestrial romances, pornography, and sharp isolation. Under the Elefant Records banner the group has issued multiple EPs and albums of this deceptively bright yet pointed material, among them the 2021 set :3 and the 2024 release 4ever.

Hailing from the Principality of Asturias in northwest Spain, classmates Olaya Pedrayes and Stephen Lyne formed the band in 2012 together with Olaya’s twin brother Juan Pedrayes. Before the year closed they put out a demo and appeared on the Elefant Records compilation A Christmas Gift for You from Elefant Records. In 2013 the label issued their first EP, Infectados, which Eva Guilala and Iván Juniper—both members of Juniper Moon and Linda Guilala—mixed and mastered. The 10" mini-LP Holi <3 arrived in 2015, co-produced by Juan and Carlos René. Two years later the band dropped the digital single “Trececatorce,” whose sound leaned far more heavily electronic than earlier work. The 2018 album Salu2 marked the first release without Lyne and pushed the blend of electronic pop and bubblegum punk still further; guitarists Mario del Valle and Lucas de la Iglesia came aboard that same year. Lyne rejoined the lineup in 2020. The following year brought the full-length :3, which folded in touches of R&B, visual kei, and additional flavors. In 2024 the band returned with the openly punk-leaning 4ever, which includes the track “Rosas y Espinas,” a collaboration with Aiko el Grupo.
