Aynsley Lister, the British blues guitarist, entered the professional music scene as a young talent by performing in bar bands beginning at age 13. His debut album, Messin' with the Kid, appeared in 1996 shortly after he turned 20, placing him alongside transatlantic contemporaries such as Jonny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Although he postponed any move across the Atlantic, Lister eventually reached American audiences. Everything I Need became his first U.S. release in 2000, after which he sustained regular touring and recording activity throughout the United Kingdom, Europe, and America.

Born in Leicester, England, on November 14, 1976, Lister began playing guitar at age eight by accompanying his father's blues records. He joined local bands upon turning 13 and cycled through several groups before establishing his own at 18. Tasty Records issued his initial two albums, Messin' with the Kid in 1996 and Pay Attention in 1997, prior to his shift to Germany-based Ruf Records for the self-titled 1999 release.

Lister remained with Ruf for seven years and produced three studio albums during that span—Everything I Need in 2000, All or Nothing in 2002, and Upside Down in 2007—along with two live recordings, Supakev n Pilchards in 2002 and Live! in 2004, plus the collaborative Pilgrimage in 2005. Everything I Need received a delayed American release in 2006, which preceded his move to Manhaton Records. There he issued Equilibrium in 2009, featuring a guest appearance by Robbie McIntosh, best known as a guitarist for Paul McCartney, and Tower Sessions in 2010, both distributed on either side of the Atlantic. He later signed with Straight Talkin' Records for Home in 2013, followed by Eyes Wide Open in 2016.
