Biography
Babehoven fuses earthy lo-fi folk with abstract poetry plus shoegaze and indie rock touches, operating as the creative vehicle of singer/songwriter Maya Bon and her collaborator Ryan Albert. Operating from their Hudson, New York base, the pair cultivated a committed D.I.Y. audience through multiple self-released EPs, eventually securing a deal with Double Double Whammy and issuing their first full-length album, Light Moving Time, in 2022.
Maya Bon, originally from Los Angeles, started the project alone while studying at college in Portland, Oregon; her 2018 home-recorded EP Sleep introduced the dreamy, introspective folk material. Back in Los Angeles she encountered producer Ryan Albert, prompting their shift into a duo whose earliest joint recording, the 2020 EP Demonstrating Visible Difference of Height, broadened both instrumentation and overall sonic reach.
Yellow Has a Pretty Good Reputation, released in 2021, examined loss and disassociation via an increasingly experimental production style and was succeeded later that year by the similarly expressive Nastavi, Calliope EP. By then the act had settled in Hudson, New York; 2022 brought the announcement of their signing to Brooklyn indie Double Double Whammy Records, whose first Babehoven title was the EP Sunk, followed in October by the full-length Light Moving Time.
