Biography
Emerging in the 1990s for a brief run, Baby Gopal operated as a New York-based quartet that fused American punk with British alternative rock. The group coalesced around lead singer Sri, an Australian expatriate who reached the United States and immersed herself in the New York hardcore scene. Raised in an entertainment-oriented family on Bondi Beach—where her father ran a nightclub—Sri left school and journeyed through Europe, Asia, and Africa, taking in the surrounding cultures. She relocated to New York City in 1995 and, alongside several participants from the local punk community, established Baby Gopal. The following year the new ensemble issued a pair of singles on the Caroline-affiliated Get-Go Records, then delivered its self-titled full-length album in 1997. The album earned favorable notice, enabling the quartet to cultivate an audience via steady touring and college-radio exposure. Shortly after signing with Tommy Boy, however, the band dissolved, freeing Sri to launch a solo career.
