Babyfather

An enigmatic British musician previously recognized as half of the duo Hype Williams, Dean Blunt operates the experimental hip-hop endeavor Babyfather. Framed as a three-person lineup that also features DJ Escrow and Gassman D—figures who may simply represent additional personas of Blunt—the project’s output merges fractured collages of dub rhythms, aggressive rapping, and sudden eruptions of harsh noise. During 2015 Blunt first released a free online EP under the Babyfather name; later that same year a mixtape called UK2UK appeared with Babyfather credited as its artist. Hyperdub put out the single “Meditation,” a Babyfather track co-produced by Arca, in the opening months of 2016. The second mixtape, Platinum Tears, arrived the following February, while the full-length debut BBF Hosted by DJ Escrow came out on Hyperdub in April.
