Biography
Benét Nutall, recording simply as Benét from his Richmond, Virginia base, entered the music scene in early 2020 through the debut single “Funny” with Teddy Meanface. Its laid-back rhythm, drifting synth textures, and floating vocals quickly drew tens of thousands of streams. Before 2020 closed, he issued the two-song Stan Account, an EP offering tributes to the shows Glee and Killing Eve. Brooklyn’s Bayonet Records then stepped in after the initial buzz, issuing a new take on “Funny” that added Childish Major and drove streaming numbers into the millions. The label followed with the August arrival of his first EP, Game Over!, and three months later released Game Over: Reloaded, featuring remixes by Wake the Wild, Russell E.L. Butler, and others.
Benét’s slinky indie soul merges classic soul, introspective rap, and current bedroom pop to examine relationships and pop culture. Momentum from “Funny” and Game Over! cleared the path for his debut album, Can I go again?, which surfaced on Bayonet in September 2023. In March 2022 a dreamy standalone single, “Will I See U?,” appeared as a collaboration with the trippy indie pop outfit Mamalarky, while November brought the further joint track “(I have jokes) If You Wanna Hear One” with Sea Glass. Singles previewing the album began surfacing around the same period. John Trainum—previously linked to Kate Bollinger and Jazz Ingram—produced the LP, which also incorporated contributions from Kyle Pulley of Thin Lips and Carlos Truly, otherwise known as Ava Luna’s Carlos Hernandez.
