Embodying a bold indie rock style laced with psychedelic textures, The Birds of Avalon draw from classic album-oriented rock foundations and summon the hard-charging, grimy throwback energy associated with Wolfmother, the Evangelicals, and the Sword. The group coalesced in Raleigh, NC, shortly after Cherry Valence alumni Cheetie Kumar and Paul Siler married and stepped away from that project. They joined forces with Craig Tilley along with drummer Scott Nurkin and bassist David Mueller, generated a batch of new material, and prepared their first album, Bazaar Bazaar, for release as 2007 approached. Volcom issued the record in May, after which the band spent the remainder of the year on the road alongside acts such as the Flaming Lips and Ted Leo & the Pharmacists. Their next offering, the Outer Upper Inner EP, appeared in spring 2008. The following year brought their sophomore full-length, Uncanny Valley. In 2011 the self-titled Birds of Avalon arrived via Bladen County Records.
