Biography
Guitarist Joe Gosney, drummer Liam Kearley, and bassist Andrew Gosden first operated as the post-rock trio Shrine, already attracting notice in the music community while performing as a three-piece. The arrival of vocalist Will Gardner, another Brighton, U.K. resident, supplied the sharper edge the musicians had been pursuing. After issuing three EPs under the Shrine name—Carpet Worms in 2012, Kursk in 2013, and Closer to the Sun in 2014—the group chose the less conventional title Black Peaks. Keeping their fusion of math and post-rock influences positioned between Pelican and Mars Volta, the quartet began drawing interest from major labels. Following repeated BBC Radio 1 airplay, including support from Zane Lowe, the four musicians secured a Sony contract in mid-2015 and entered Middlefarm Studios in Devon to work with producer Mark Roberts. Their debut album Statues appeared early in 2016, introduced by the preceding singles “Saviour” and “Glass Built Castles.”
