Biography
Boilermaker emerged from Leucadia, California, as an underground force in indie rock and emo, distinguished by its dynamic musicality and impassioned vocals. Though the group operated only from 1993 to 2000, its recordings supplied a clear template for the post-hardcore developments of the following decade, especially through the albums Watercourse and Wallace's Shadow. In 2025 Numero Group assembled every existing track into the anthology Not Enough Time to Get Anything Halfway Done.
The quartet formed in 1993 when Terrin Durfey on vocals and bass joined guitarists Rich Sanderson and Mike Eginton plus drummer Timothy Semple. Their approach refreshed hardcore by pairing angsty vocals with nervy rhythms and bright major-chord riffs. Over the next several years the band placed tracks on compilations, released multiple singles, and completed three studio albums: Watercourse in 1995, Wallace's Shadow in 1996, and a self-titled LP in 1998. After the members elected to follow separate paths, a seventeen-track overview titled Leucadia appeared in 2001. Durfey remained active in The Jade Shader and Pinback until his death from cancer in 2008. Subsequent acts in emo and post-hardcore, among them Sunny Day Real Estate and Jimmy Eat World, have repeatedly named Boilermaker as a formative influence. The 2025 Numero Group collection gathered the complete studio output, encompassing every single and rarity.
