Formed in 1998 by DJ Gismo, born Ismo Lappalainen, along with B.O.W. (an abbreviation for “Brothers of the Words” and born Raymond Ebanks), the Finnish hip-hop/electro-funk/house group made an immediate splash on the domestic pop scene in 1999 by issuing their debut hit, “Freestyler.” Once the track had scaled the charts in Finland, Denmark, and Germany, it went on to rank as the year 2000’s top-selling single throughout Europe. Bomfunk MC’s also earned the Best Nordic Act trophy at that year’s MTV Europe Music Awards. Their first album, In Stereo, which gained exposure through energetic concerts highlighted by a well-received breakdance routine, contained the chart-topping singles “Uprocking Beats” and “B-Boys & Flygirls.”

In 2002, Bomfunk MC’s reappeared with their second full-length record, Burnin’ Sneakers.
