Biography
Knife Party arose as an auxiliary electronic dance venture launched by the founding pair from Perth, Australia's longstanding drum'n'bass ensemble Pendulum. The duo quickly captured attention in the early 2010s through their partnership with Swedish House Mafia on the multi-platinum single "Antidote," after which they issued several globally charting EPs and unveiled their first proper album, Abandon Ship, in 2014.
Gareth McGrillen and Rob Swire introduced their hard-edged electro-house and dubstep sound in late 2011 with the Earstorm digital release 100% No Modern Talking, made available as a free download on the duo's site. Their Virgin-issued collaboration with Swedish House Mafia, credited as Swedish House Mafia vs. Knife Party and titled "Antidote," earned triple-platinum certification and registered on charts in nine or more territories. Around the same period they supplied remixes for Swedish House Mafia's "Save the World," Porter Robinson's "Unison," and Nero's "Crush on You." Mid-2012 brought their second EP, Rage Valley, again via Earstorm, while the follow-up Haunted House arrived roughly a year later and reached number one on the Billboard Dance chart. With three EPs completed, the duo delivered Abandon Ship in 2014; the album included Simon Aldred on "EDM Trend Machine" and Bryn Christopher on "Superstar," placing just outside the Billboard 200's Top 50.
After issuing their fourth EP, Trigger Warning, McGrillen and Swire redirected their energies, surfacing only for the 2016 collaboration "Battle Sirens" with Tom Morello and the 2018 track "Harpoon" alongside Pegboard Nerds. That same year they launched the radio program Knifecast, debuting the previously unreleased song "Ghost Town." The track appeared on their fifth EP, Lost Souls, released in 2019 and also featuring Harrison on "Death & Desire."
