Boombox Cartel, the Los Angeles-rooted EDM project, merges trap, electro-house, and dubstep with Latin flavors. The group first surfaced through the pop-tinged 2015 single "B2U," which drew backing from leading DJs including Skrillex and Diplo and led to appearances at Lollapalooza and Electric Daisy Carnival.
Americo Garcia, a Laredo, Texas native, and Jorge Medina, born in Mexico City, attended high school together in Monterrey, Mexico. Both later moved to Minnesota for enrollment at the McNally Smith College of Music in St. Paul, where they launched Boombox Cartel in 2012. After cultivating a following in the Twin Cities electronic circuit and expanding to additional markets, the pair relocated to Los Angeles, prompting their professional ascent. Several self-released tracks and remixes preceded the FRNT-issued "B2U" featuring vocalist Ian Everson in 2015, which attracted attention from EDM DJs. Further releases followed with NGHTMRE and Bro Safari, while remixes were completed for Major Lazer, Kill the Noise, Louis the Child, and additional artists. Diplo's Mad Decent label issued the debut EP Cartel in 2017. Subsequent singles on the imprint, notably 2018's "Moon Love" with Nessly and the Flosstradamus collaboration "ID," leaned more explicitly toward trap. The year 2019 yielded "New Wip" alongside MadeinTYO and "Drip" with Desiigner, the latter co-produced by Dillon Francis.
