Primarily the project of Nashville, Tennessee’s Daniel James, Canon Blue produces indie-tronic material informed by the electronic outfits Boards of Canada and Autechre together with the songwriters Serge Gainsbourg and Nick Drake. Released in Europe during September 2007 on the Danish Rumraket label, the Colonies LP was mixed by Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear and mastered by noted electronic artist Cristian Vogel. While touring Europe, James initiated work on the subsequent album, laying down tracks between dates and enlisting the Amiina string quartet to steer the arrangements toward wider orchestral terrain. The sessions yielded the lush and eclectic 2011 album Rumspringa, issued by Temporary Residence. After years contending with mounting anxiety and depression, James resurfaced in 2017 with his third Canon Blue LP, Lasso Yo, again on Temporary Residence. His most personal record to date, it was performed, recorded, and produced entirely by James and mixed by Tortoise’s John McEntire.
