Biography
Originating in France, Caravan Palace craft a brisk, electronically inflected blend of jazz manouche, club grooves, and pop that they label “electro-swing.” While Django Reinhardt remains their central touchstone, they also draw from Vitalic, Cab Calloway, Justice, Lionel Hampton, and Daft Punk. The ensemble surfaced in 2008, sending their debut album Caravan Palace to number 11 in France. Subsequent releases returned them to the French Top 20 with 2012’s Panic and placed both 2015’s Robot Face and 2019’s Chronologic inside the Top Ten of Billboard’s electronic albums chart; in 2024 they issued Gangbusters Melody Club.
Formed in Paris, the original lineup comprised Charles Delaporte on bass and programming, Arnaud Vial on guitar and programming, Hugues Payen on violin and programming, vocalist Zoé Colotis, Antoine Toustou handling electronics and trombone, and Camille Chapelière on sax and clarinet. The musicians first convened around 2006, ostensibly to score a silent adult film, yet wider attention arrived only after they posted tracks online. A concert tour ensued, leading to the 2008 release of Caravan Palace on the independent French imprint Wagram Music. Bolstered by the single “Jolie Coquine,” the record earned praise for its fidelity to classic jazz traditions while peaking at number 11 on the domestic albums chart.
The band resurfaced in 2012 with the follow-up Panic, which added keyboardist Paul-Marie Barbier to the roster. Preceded by the singles “Clash,” “Rock It for Me,” and “Dramophone,” the album re-entered the French Top 20. Two years later came the playfully eccentric Robot Face, presented as , which registered on charts in France, Belgium, Switzerland, and on dance listings in the United Kingdom and United States.
An EP titled Wonderland surfaced in 2016, after which the group maintained a lower profile; during this interval reedist Chapelière departed and saxophonist Victor Raimondeau joined. Early 2019 brought the single “Miracle,” followed by “About You,” “Plume,” and “Supersonics” ahead of the full-length Chronologic. Issued that August, the set reached number 60 in France and number six on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart.
Further personnel shifts saw Raimondeau exit, with trombonist Martin Berlugue and saxophonist Lucas Saint-Cricq taking his place. In 2024 Caravan Palace unveiled their fifth studio album, Gangbusters Melody Club, which again entered the French Top 200 and climbed to number ten on the U.K. Dance Albums chart.
