cehryl's full-length debut album Slow Motion appeared in 2020, its carefully layered arrangements occasionally betraying the songwriter and producer's background in classical music through quietly sensual material that blends R&B with adult-alternative textures. Born in Hong Kong under the name that forms an anagram of Cheryl, she absorbed a broad range of pop and R&B while growing up, citing influences that included Alicia Keys, Jay Chou, and Elliott Smith. After spending time in England she relocated to Boston to attend the Berklee College of Music. Online track uploads began in 2016 alongside the arrival of her first EP, Delusions. The follow-up EP Wherever It May Be arrived the next year, drawing wider notice when she supported Ravyn Lenae, Raveena, and Dijon on tour. cehryl later returned to Hong Kong, issuing Slow Motion through the Nettwerk label in June 2020.
