Biography
Charlie Hilton first rose to prominence singing lead for the ethereal Portland band Blouse after spending her childhood in a free-spirited Los Angeles household. A musician parent who composed a new age Christmas album helped shape that environment, as did the Sanskrit name Palana her parents chose at her birth; she adopted the first name Charlie at age 19. During her teenage years she picked up guitar and began composing material, later founding Blouse in 2010 alongside Patrick Adams and Jacob Portrait, the latter also known for his role in Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Following the 2013 arrival of Blouse’s second album, Imperium, she turned her attention to solo material. In a Brooklyn studio she cut the track “100 Million” with assistance from Mac DeMarco, Woods’ Jarvis Taveniere, and Yeasayer’s Anand Wilder. The remainder of her 2016 debut album Palana was shaped through further work with Portrait, whose wide-ranging production style guided her toward sources as varied as Nico, Mazzy Star, and Marc Bolan.
