Puro Instinct

Puro Instinct serves as the dreamy pop vehicle for Hollywood-born sisters Piper and Skylar Kaplan. Its beginnings trace to an encounter Piper had with experimental musician R. Stevie Moore while visiting New York City. She then began crafting songs together with Skylar, the self-taught guitarist who was thirteen at the time. Mexican Summer signed the duo after hearing their demos and put out the 2009 EP Something About the Chaparrals. The single "Slivers of You" followed before the darker-sounding self-titled EP appeared on Gloriette, the label run by Nite Jewel's Ramona Gonzalez. In 2010 the Kaplans started recording their first album. Issued in 2011, Headbangers in Ecstasy displayed a smoother sound than their earlier material and included a collaboration with Ariel Pink on the single "Stilyagi." The sisters next explored dance-inspired territory, working with French electro producer Strip Steve and house producer SFV Acid before releasing the balearic single "Dream Lover" in 2012, produced by Pharaohs' Alejandro Cohen. They began shaping their second album after drawing ideas from a month-long stay in Australia and the darker facets of their hometown. Autodrama arrived in June 2016 and carried contributions from Pink as well as Sensations Fix's Franco Falsini.
