Originating from Brownsville, TX, Chelo Silva rose to notice in the late '30s as a foundational figure in the United States' traditional Mexican music community. It was following her move to Corpus Christi that this new talent received the designation La Reina del Bolero (Bolero's Queen) due to the romantic, sentimental, and intensely emotive quality of her performances. Chelo Silva claimed the title of Queen of Tejano decades prior to Selena's ascent as the leading Tex-Mex performer, with the genre taking hold in the vicinity of the U.S./Mexican border in the mid-'50s.
