Drawn to the sounds of Throbbing Gristle along with other industrial acts from the 1980s, Jared Hendriksen, who handled vocals and programming, first connected with programmer Dylan Thomas More in Washington, D.C., during the late 1980s. The pair launched their Chemlab project by issuing the 10 Ton Pressure EP in 1990; a supporting tour alongside Nine Inch Nails the next year helped broaden their reach. Once they inked a deal with Metal Blade, Hendriksen and More recruited guitarist Steve Watson, bassist Ned Wahl, and drummer Mark Kermanj to lay down Burn Out at the Hydrogen Bar, which came out in 1994. In 1995 Chemlab revisited their first EP for the mini-LP Magnetic Field Remixes, adding a fresh track and multiple remixes to the package. East Side Militia, their sophomore full-length, surfaced in fall 1996. Three years after that, Burn Out at the Hydrogen Bar resurfaced.
